I play alto saxophone and did a brief stint of tenor for a while. Feel free to chime in.

Played Piano from when I was 4 until when I was 14....still remember some of it, but I sadly can’t just sit down and play anymore.
I do still have my drum set and play that though - Peavey International Series II with Peavey High-Hat and Crash/Ride Cymbals and Sabian B8 Crash and Splash cymbals! Was in concert band from Grades 7-12 in Jr. High/High School! :)
(Old pic before I got my Splash cymbal, ignore the mess, haha!)

Violin, and I teach myself acoustic guitar when I have the time, which is pretty much never nowadays.
And no, not “I play guitar” as in “I record myself covering songs with simple chords” like everyone else my age, I read the tabs or learn by ear.

He’s all about that bass, bout that bass, bout that base ( no treble!)
Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

Oh geez, this is like asking any Oppo what cars they’ve owned for me. First off, I’m a classically trained semi-professional singer. (As in a generally get paid, but it’s not my day job). In addition, I play guitar, bass, harmonica, and piano. Other instruments I’ve played but haven’t picked up in years include trumpet, euphonium, and trombone.

Started on violin in 3rd grade, moved on to flute, piccolo, oboe, and bari saxophone. Hardest days were going from bari in jazz band (early morning practice) to oboe in concert band (first period).
Now I mess around with an acoustic guitar and I occasionally attempt to learn something new on the piano, but I only have so many hours in the day and most are consumed with work or family activities. It's all about the priorities.

When I was in high school, every moron with a guitar learned the chords to Wonderwall. To this day, I refuse to play this song, even though I don’t mind the song itself.

I knew you were a professional trumpetier, but I didn’t know you had 3 degrees. Impressive. Most impressive.

Been playing the Piano for almost 20 years now. My repetoire is all classical and romantic Era music though.

Altogether sax clarinet and guitar/bass. My favorite is my custom ‘KingCaster’ guitar. I’ll find a picture later.

As a middle school band director, I play all typical wind and percussion instruments at about a 9th grade proficiency, save for piccolo and bassoon, which...yeah, let’s not go there.
My bachelor’s degree was in clarinet performance, although I tend to specialize in harmony clarinets. I used to get hired for pit gigs a lot because of my ability to swap between almost all woodwinds. In college, I was hired out for jazz saxophone a lot because of my improv background (thanks, church worship!). My master’s degree started as a continuation of my clarinet studies, but morphed into a conducting degree instead.
My piano skills have rusted since college, although I can still play barroom-style decently, so long as you don’t expect me to sing at the same time. I’ve been playing electric bass with my current church’s worship band for the past three years, and I’ve re-sharpened my drum set chops since I was forced to take over my school’s jazz band. (I practiced my BRAINS out on drum set and marimba for my percussion tech classes in college. Fun stuff, but far, far more difficult than all you armchair musicians assume. I have incredible respect for drummers who are excellent at their craft, and nothing but spite for every non-musician who assumes that anyone can beat a drum.)
Of course, my musical journey started with voice, at the age of four. Through my entire waking life, I’ve been a singer, and was always an active vocalist in both church, high school, and college choirs, even as I was studying to be a performing clarinetist. There’s something to be said about holding tight to your roots so you always remember where you came from. ^_^

Ayyy I [used to] play trombone too. I still can, it’s just been a little while since I’ve really put any time into playing it. Band director friend was at a competition today down in San Antonio, I guess this must be a big weekend for marching band contests.

I never thought I would have liked it either. But 7th grade required a semester of band. Next thing you know I was hooked.
I want to try and play trombone now though. I mean if I was able to learn an instrument once...
![]() 10/31/2015 at 23:48 |

I have to learn another instrument, there’s too many saxophones in our jazz band program at college. My hands are “curved” after playing it and it makes it difficult to learn piano and organ.

That’s terribly kind of you to say. I have a hard time seeing myself anywhere near the same level as our first responders and military, but I certainly appreciate your kindness. As for being a professional gigger...KEEP LIVING THE DREAM. ^_^ lol

I was at the same one. It’s probably the second biggest contest in the world to be honest. I’m a senior and that was our last contest so I’m done with marching band forever...which is kinda sad

Started out on Violin when I was like 5 (amazing way to develop an ear), then added mandolin and started playing bluegrass (same tuning as a fiddle) when I got bored of classical music. Picked up alto sax in middle school, as I’ve always loved jazz, and played in the usual school concert and jazz bands Later I was part of a sax, drums and bass jazz combo with friends, but nothing past a five track demo and some tips-only gigs. Now I mostly play acoustic guitar, because it’s just so damn portable and versatile. Next I’d like to learn piano and/or drum kit... Though there’s a bit of a size issue with that haha

Pretty much just guitar these days, though I’ve become better at collecting than playing. I used to play bassoon in high school and wouldn’t mind teaching myself ukulele.

Violin, I’m pretty good at that (not professional or anything, just a hobby)
